Yuanbei Island is a small outer island in southwestern Penghu, roughly 40 minutes by passenger ferry from Magong Harbor. The island has a small permanent population and retains some of Penghu’s most unspoiled natural character. Mangrove wetlands, intertidal shellfish and fiddler crabs, and undeveloped white-sand beaches form a distinctive ecological landscape, making it a destination for travelers who want to experience nature away from the main tourist circuit. There are no convenience stores or hotels on the island; most visitors join a day trip organized by a local travel agency, or stay at a guesthouse for a quieter experience.
Highlights
The main draws of Yuanbei Island are its mangrove wetlands and intertidal ecology. At high tide, the mangrove root systems are fully submerged; as the tide recedes, beaches and tide pools are exposed, revealing hermit crabs, fiddler crabs, clams, and other benthic creatures. In spring, new mangrove shoots occasionally emerge. The northern and eastern shores consist of pristine white-sand beaches with no artificial seawalls. At sunrise, low-angle light turns the sand golden; at sunset, the sky fills with red hues — both draw photographers who time their visits accordingly. On clear afternoons, visitors can look west from the beach toward Siyu and Magong Harbor.
Getting There and Nearby
No bus service is available. Yuanbei Island must be reached by passenger ferry from Magong Harbor. Ferries are typically operated by local guesthouses or travel agencies and generally run once a day (frequency varies by season and passenger numbers), with a crossing time of about 40 minutes. Sailings are more reliable during the tourist season (May–September); from October, northeast monsoon winds begin to affect services, and winter crossings (November–April) are frequently cancelled. Check schedules in advance or call your guesthouse to confirm. If you plan to stay overnight, book your guesthouse 1–2 weeks ahead. For ferry schedules and booking information, see the Penghu Public Transport page.
There are no convenience stores, restaurants, or petrol stations on the island; stock up on food, drinks, and supplies in Magong City before you depart. Bring sufficient water, sun protection, and a rubbish bag — Penghu’s outer islands promote a leave-no-trace policy.
