Zhuwan Dayi Temple stands in Zhuwan Village, Xiyu Township, Penghu County, and is primarily dedicated to Guan Sheng Dijun (Lord Guan, the Deity of Righteousness). The temple’s origins are traced to the late Ming Dynasty, approximately 400 years ago. In 1862, neighboring villages jointly constructed a temple initially named “Nagong,” enshrining both Prince Wen and Lord Guan. It was later renamed “Dayi Temple” to reflect Lord Guan’s spirit of loyalty and righteousness. The main hall was rebuilt in 1973, and the Lotus Cave was completed in 1986, adding an architectural curiosity that draws both pilgrims and general visitors from outside the area. The temple posts daily opening hours of 04:30–18:30 with free admission; for confirmation around special ceremonies or temporary closures, call the temple office at 06-998-1154.
Highlights
The temple entrance is dominated by a large statue of Lord Guan’s famed red horse, Red Hare, alongside a groom figure. Statues of Guan Ping and Zhou Cang flank the entrance on either side, contributing to the temple’s solemn and formal character.
The Lotus Cave, an underground grotto built in 1986, is the most architecturally distinctive element. The interior is lined with coral-shaped lotus formations and whale bones among other decorative pieces, lit by dim amber light that gives the space the atmosphere of an underwater palace.
A viewing platform on the temple grounds faces the harbor. The outlook at sunset draws visitors in the early evening, when the area tends to be quieter than during midday.
