Zero West Line

馬公總站 → 馬公總站

Route Zero West Loop (route number 0769) is a Magong city circular bus operated by the Penghu County Public Bus and Ferry Authority. The adult fare is NT$7; the concessionary fare is NT$4. Two departures run daily: the 07:40 service is a short-haul trip covering only the first seven stops to Chongguang Station (arriving 07:49); the 08:30 service is the complete West Loop, departing Magong Main Station and serving Chongguang, Siwei, National Penghu University of Science and Technology (NPU), Linsen Road, the County Government, Penghu Hospital, and Magong Commercial Port — 27 stops in total — returning to Magong Main Station at 09:01. The route connects schools (Magong Elementary School, Zhongxing Elementary School, NPU), government offices (County Government, Reserve Command), and medical facilities (Penghu Hospital, Penghu Hospital Emergency Entrance), primarily serving local residents commuting to school, work, or medical appointments. Visitors rarely use this route.

Route Overview

Route Zero is divided into two city loops running in opposite directions: the West Loop (this page, route 0769, marked “零路[西]” on the bus) and the East Loop. The entire route stays within Magong City limits. Note that route 0769 encompasses two sub-routes: the 07:40 departure (sub-route 0W) is a short-haul service from Magong Main Station to Chongguang Station (seven stops only); the 08:30 departure (sub-route 0WA) is the full West Loop covering all 27 stops. To reach Siwei, NPU, the County Government, or Penghu Hospital, the 08:30 departure is the only option. Also worth noting: the Penghu Hospital Emergency Entrance stop is not served at all hours — it is only included on weekday departures before noon; weekday afternoon and public holiday services skip it entirely. For the hospital’s main entrance, use the Penghu Hospital stop.

Best Time to Ride

Departures on Route Zero West Loop are extremely limited: currently only 07:40 and 08:30 from Magong Main Station. The schedule is designed entirely for the morning commute, school run, and government business — there is no service after 9:00 AM. The 07:40 departure serves only Chongguang Station (stop 7, arriving 07:49) and cannot reach Siwei, NPU, the County Government, or Penghu Hospital. For those destinations, the 08:30 departure is required: per the TDX timetable, it arrives at NPU at around 08:48, the County Government at around 08:56, Penghu Hospital at around 09:00, and returns to Magong Main Station at 09:01. From November to March, the northeast monsoon brings strong winds to the Siwei and Chongguang area; stand on the sheltered side of the bus stop sign and dress warmly. TDX open data currently lists all seven days of the week as scheduled, but actual weekend dispatch can vary; call the Penghu County Public Bus and Ferry Authority on 06-9213822 before relying on a Saturday or Sunday trip. Afternoon service is unavailable on any day, so a taxi or rental scooter are the practical alternatives later in the day.

Stop-by-Stop Guide

The following descriptions are based on the full West Loop service (08:30 departure, 27 stops). The 07:40 short-haul service covers only the first seven stops (Magong Main Station to Chongguang Station).

Leaving Magong Main Station, the bus calls at Magong Elementary School, Guangrong Neighborhood Southbound, Longxing New Town, and Guangrong Neighborhood Northbound. This stretch marks the boundary between Magong’s old city core and newer residential developments. The covered walkways around Magong Elementary School are busy with students on weekday mornings; Longxing New Town is a recently completed residential complex whose residents — many of them civil servants — are regular commuters.

Entering the Chongguang–Siwei corridor, the bus stops at Chongguang South, Chongguang, and Chongguang East, then winds through Siwei West, Siwei South, Siwei North, and Siwei East. The Chongguang neighborhood has a strong concentration of military housing and redeveloped veterans’ quarter residences. Siwei is a traditional fishing village on the northern side of Penghu’s main island, where alleyways still feature walls built from coral-reef stone. This section has the most closely spaced stops on the entire route; the bus moves slowly through its bends, and within walking distance of these stops you will find traditional temples and small fish-landing points.

After looping through Siwei, the bus heads south, calling at Shanliao, Zhongxing Elementary School, Sando Road, and NPU, then continues along Linsen Road North, Linsen Road South, and Yangming Road before serving Beichen Post Office, County Government, Reserve Command, and Zhongzheng Road. The final stretch calls at Penghu Hospital Emergency Entrance (conditional — weekdays before noon only; see Route Overview above), Penghu Hospital, and Magong Commercial Port. NPU is the most significant intermediate stop, with a noticeable surge of alighting passengers on weekday school days. The County Government and Reserve Command stops are surrounded by multiple government offices, making them the most convenient stops for official business. Magong Commercial Port is adjacent to the passenger ferry terminal, and some travelers transfer here to ferries serving the outer islands.

Nearby Attractions

After completing the full loop on the 08:30 departure and returning to Magong Main Station at 09:01, a five-to-ten-minute walk brings you to the heart of Magong’s old town — a natural starting point for combining the bus ride with a walking tour. Tianhou Temple (the Mazu Temple of Magong) is one of the oldest surviving Mazu temples in Taiwan; it is roughly five minutes on foot from Magong Main Station. The stone-paved lanes around the temple courtyard preserve the street layout from the Qing dynasty era; early mornings are calm, with incense smoke and few visitors — a pleasant post-bus walk without the queues. Beside the temple stands the Four-Eyed Well, one of Penghu’s most recognizable historic structures: the well opening is divided into four sections, and local tradition dates its construction to the Ming dynasty. Both can be visited in a single short walk.

Continuing along the stone-paved lane in front of Tianhou Temple leads into Zhongyang Old Street, a stretch of a few hundred metres lined with coral-reef-stone architecture, traditional eateries, and souvenir shops — the most representative old-town streetscape in Penghu. If time allows, a further fifteen-minute walk north from the old street reaches Guanyin Pavilion, a seaside pavilion with an open view across the seawall, popular with local residents for morning walks. All four landmarks are reachable on foot from Magong Main Station; arriving back at 09:01 on the 08:30 departure gives you time to see them before the morning market crowds thin out, at an unhurried pace.
