Shanshui Beach sits on the eastern outskirts of Magong and is one of the few fine-sand beaches on Penghu’s main island. Unlike most of Penghu’s coastline — composed largely of basalt or sandstone formations — Shanshui’s sand is fine and smooth, with a gentle underwater slope that produces a soft crunching sound underfoot. The beach extends roughly 800 metres from east to west, with a wide intertidal zone: at low tide an expansive sandy shore is exposed, while at high tide the water deepens noticeably. The area supports a variety of marine life and is popular with both locals and visitors for summer relaxation and sunset watching.
Highlights
The eastern end of the beach features a small shell accumulation band, and the intertidal zone is home to hermit crabs, starfish, and other tidal-pool creatures — a good spot for children to explore the natural environment. Marine activity peaks in the intertidal areas just before and after high tide. In the late afternoon (16:00–19:00 is ideal), the western sky turns golden and its reflection spreads across the calm sea surface, making this one of Penghu’s better locations for photography. From spring through early summer (April–June), bioluminescent plankton can sometimes be observed at night — similar to the blue-light phenomenon seen elsewhere along Taiwan’s coast.
The beach is suitable for snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and other water sports; stronger winter swells also attract surfers. Shanshui Hill 30 Scenic Overlook lies just to the east and offers a panoramic view over the beach and Penghu’s southern coastline. When the northeast monsoon blows in winter, waves crash onto the shore with considerable force — the spectacle is worth seeing, but conditions are too rough for entering the water.
Getting There and Nearby
From Magong city centre, take the bus to the “Shanshui Beach” stop or “Shanshui Beach Terminal” (services are infrequent; check the timetable before you go). The journey takes about 20–25 minutes. By car, head east along Provincial Highway 1 (Peng-1) and follow the signs; parking is available near the beach.
Nearby attractions include Tongliang Banyan — the largest banyan tree in Penghu, about a 5-minute drive away — the Shanshui Hill 30 Scenic Overlook, and the traditional Shanshui village with its unhurried local atmosphere. Coin-operated showers and changing facilities are available at the beach. There are no food or drink vendors on site; bring your own water and food. A small convenience store in Shanshui village can cover basic supplies.
