Penghu Aquarium is situated in Qitou, Baisha Township, and provides a direct introduction to Penghu’s marine ecosystem and ocean conservation work. The exhibits feature fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other marine organisms common to Penghu and broader Taiwan waters, as well as living coral display tanks. Indoor exhibitions allow visitors to understand Penghu’s distinctive bay environment and marine resources regardless of weather. The aquarium is particularly well-suited for families with children, school educational groups, and travelers seeking indoor activities during Penghu’s northeast monsoon season. As one of Penghu’s few dedicated marine-themed museums, it plays a role in public science education and conservation outreach.

Highlights

The exhibition space is divided into several themed areas. The Penghu Waters Fish Hall displays edible species commonly caught around Penghu, including grouper, sea bass, mackerel scad, rudderfish, and tilefish. Each species is labeled with its scientific name, key characteristics, and local fisheries notes, helping visitors understand how these fish relate to Penghu’s fishing culture.

The Coral and Invertebrate Zone is the section most worth lingering in. Penghu’s coral reef ecosystem has significant conservation importance within Taiwan. The aquarium maintains living display tanks featuring stony corals, soft corals, and the small fish, shrimp, and shellfish that inhabit them, giving visitors a concrete look at marine conservation in Penghu waters.

The Touch Pool lets visitors get close to sea stars, sea urchins, and live shallow-water fish. The area is especially suitable for children building a hands-on connection with marine life. Staff are typically present to explain the habits of species found in Penghu’s waters.

The aquarium also houses a Penghu Fisheries Development Exhibition, displaying traditional fishing gear, artifacts related to dried fish production, and the history of local fishing techniques. The section contextualizes Penghu’s relationship with the sea as something rooted in subsistence and generational livelihood, not only tourism.

Getting There and Nearby Attractions

Penghu Aquarium is located near Qitou Visitor Center in Baisha Township, which functions as an access hub for attractions along Penghu’s northwest coast. From Magong city center, take a bus toward Baisha and alight at Qitou Outer Stop or Qitou Visitor Center; the walk to the aquarium takes about 8–10 minutes, and the bus ride takes approximately 20–30 minutes. By car, you can drive directly to the parking lot in front of the entrance.

The Qitou area borders the Penghu Bay tourism zone. Within a 5–15 minute walk you will find Qitou Visitor Center (where Penghu tourism brochures are available), the Penghu Bay scenic area (with viewing points and intertidal zones), and Shanshui Beach (a fine white-sand beach suitable for afternoon visits). These can be combined into a half-day itinerary. The aquarium has restrooms, drinking water, and a light refreshments counter. Allow 1.5–2 hours for a comfortable visit.
